Art and Mental Health

Art is often misunderstood. It is not just painting and scriptures. It is way more than that, and if you ever talk to a person who is performing art themselves, then they will tell you that art is life. It is a wonderful and one of the easiest ways to relieve the stress that one feels in life, and it is a practice that has been followed for years and years.

How Does Art Work?

When a person is performing art, he or she is fully engrossed in it. There is no world other than that art, and as they do it, certain neurotransmitters are released into the brain. Primarily amongst the neurotransmitters are the serotonin and dopamine. These neurotransmitters give the person a sense of achievement and keep the person motivated. Along with this, GABA neurotransmitters are also released as the work is finished as it relaxes the brain and eventually the person feels invigorated. The different types of art forms followed are:

  • Dancing
  • Painting
  • Writing
  • Sketching

Why is Art Not Followed?

People assume that a person needs to be creative to follow and perform art. They usually think that they do not have a lot of creative intelligence which is usually needed to do well in arts. Be it writing or drawing or any of the other forms of art, people are always hesitant in performing arts.

This is wrong as art does not require you to do well. This is not math in which the answer is either correct or incorrect. Art does not have a collective right answer or a collective wrong answer. It all depends on a person’s perceptive and imagination. It needs the person to let go of the notions of right and wrong so that they may enjoy the form.

What Can Art Do?

Art can make the person creative. Creativity is not something that only unique and gifted people are born with. In fact, almost every single child is creative in nature. They can imagine thousands of different landscapes and scenarios which an adult human cannot. This is because as a person grows up, they stop and curb down their creativity.

Creativity is a skill that is cumulative in its growth. One just needs to let it flow freely, and as that happens, one can enjoy every single thing. The more a person enjoys the art and the creative flow, the stronger it gets the next time around. The result is something that satisfies you and eventually leaves you perfectly relaxed and at peace.

Science Can Back This:

In France, the country which is the number one in the consumption of antidepressants and stress relievers, a method was tried out. Adults were asked to try out painting a sketch book. The result was the adults who tried out painting eventually felt light and happy and those who tried other methods of stress reliever like prescriptions did not.

This natural method of coping with stress is the cheapest of the lot, and one needs to understand that the method can actually work. There is no judgment in art, and everyone is allowed to have their opinions.
