Focus 101

A powerful determinant of one’s success is focus. This is a bit of Jedi wisdom that has proven to be true in practice.

How many of us often sit at a desk with an intention of getting some work done but end up procrastinating instead? The answer is: each and every one of us.

In spite of the best of intentions, at times we cannot focus our brains on the task at hand. This happens to the best of us. It is rather frustrating and results in slack in our performance.

There are certain factors that play a vital role in determining our level of concentration or focus. Let us find out what they are and decide a plan of action to remedy this accordingly.

Focus Is a Dependent Variable

The three most important factors that come into play here are as follows:

  • Environment
  • Nutrition
  • Mindset

Your surroundings and the environment in which you work has a big role to play when it come to your ability to focus on work. No normal human being can get any job done when he is uncomfortable and uneasy. Your physical environment has to be welcoming for you to be able to spend time there and concentrate on your work.

Your body’s health largely affects your ability to work efficiently. This health in turn depends on your nutritional intake. So, make sure you feed your body for it to not let you down during times of work.

Low efficiency level and poor productivity are proportional to constant distractions. Your mind needs to be free from distractions and it has to really want to work for you to actually work. Never undermine the role of your mindset.  As for nutrition, Alpha Levo IQ enhances focus.

The Wanderer

Taming a wandering mind is perhaps the hardest task that one can take on. Who has not faced the problem of mind – wandering?

A child sitting in a classroom, apparently paying attention but is he really? His mind has probably wandered off to the latest action figure that has come out in the market, one which he longs to acquire.

Not just kids, what about adults? Sitting at a boring meeting, staring intently at her colleague presenting a paper, but where is her mind? Most probably she is thinking about what to eat after the meeting as her stomach is already growling with hunger.

Crank Up That Focus

We have established that the human mind is a wanderer. Bringing it back to where it belongs is a mammoth task. However, it is not impossible.

There are some tactics that may come in handy to trick your mind into paying attention and focusing. Let us check these out one by one.

  1. Comfort Level Up

First of all, your primary objective should be to be at ease with your environment. We have seen how big of a role your work environment plays in your concentration level. So, make your surroundings comfortable.

Position your chair and desk or any other component of your workstation in such a way that you do not get irritated with it and leave.

Try to work in an airy environment with lots of natural light. This keeps the mind fresh and sharp.

Listening to music might help you keep your focus. A steady background noise drowns out other distractions and helps you focus.

  1. Eat Right

What you put in your body is of great significance. Provide your brain with the correct nutrition to help it stay sharp and focused.

Drink plenty of water. Dehydration slows you down and makes you tired easily. Hydrate your brain to help its performance peak.

Breakfast, being the most relevant meal of the day cannot be neglected at all. Hunger clouds your brain and you get distracted easily. Eating a hearty breakfast can go a long way in helping your mind focus.

  1. Get Up

Sitting at your desk all through the day, apparently busy at work not only makes you lazy, but it also allows your brain to lose focus.

You are more susceptible to distractions if you stay stationary all through the day. Regular walking has proven to be useful in increasing concentration. It gives you the exercise you need for both your body and mind.

  1. Set Your Priorities Straight

Having too much to do and too little time to do it can often lead to disastrous results. It is immensely distracting and invariable results in procrastination.

Hopping from one task to the next merely creates an illusion of work. In reality, you achieve very little this way.

Therefore, it is imperative to prioritize your tasks. Rank the things you need to do according to importance and urgency and get it done one by one. Making To – Do lists might prove to be useful in this regard.

  1. Give Yourself a Break

You may intend to sit for hours on end and get up only when the job is done. But more often than not, this proves to be a futile attempt.

Take short breaks, even if they are only 10 minutes long. This acts as a refresh button for the brain. These breaks simply give your mind some rest and time to refocus.

  1. Reward Yourself

Promise to reward yourself on completion of a big task. This will act as an incentive and help you stay focused.

Even if the reward is just a bar of ice cream or an hour of TV, you deserve it.
