Glial Cells

Glial Cells are part of the central nervous system of the body. Other than the Glial Cells, the nervous system also contains the neurons where the ratio between them is 3 is to 1, with the Glial Cells represent the greater proportion. They are also called the supporting cells of the central nervous system, as their main function is to assist the neurons and ensure their smooth functioning. They do this by performing four primary functions:

Get a firm hold on the neurons by surrounding them.

  • Provide oxygen and nutrients to them.
  • Facilitate insulation of one neuron from another.
  • Destroy neurons when the time comes and then remove them from the nervous system.

There are four types of Glial Cells which perform varying functions. They are:

1. Astrocytes

These cells form themselves into a matrix like arrangements which while providing physical support also helps in isolating synapses which in turn ensure efficient neural message transmission.

They rid the brain of waste through a process called Phagocytosis. They Glial Cells carry this out by establishing contact with the neural waste by pushing itself against it until it finally engulfs and digests it.

They regulate the chemical composition of the fluid which surrounds the neurons and also provides the neuron with chemicals which they require for functioning.

They also look after the nourishment requirements of the neurons.

2. Oligodendrocytes

They are required in the production of the Myelin sheath which provides support to axons by insulating them and facilitating action potentials to be conducted along the axon. This sheath consists of lipid and protein in a 4 is to 1 ratio.

3. Microglia

They are the smallest of the Glial Cells which assist in phagocytes.

By protecting the brain from microorganisms, they ensure its immunity.
