Green Tea and EGCG

Green tea is a world renowned drink from Asia. It is one of the most beneficial drinks available in nature, and many companies are trying to emulate its efficiency with bottled drinking green tea. The tea has a lot of potential because of the individual constituents of green tea. Some 100 constituents are available in green tea, and the most potent one is EGCG.

What is EGCG?

EGCG is a polyphenol compound that is found primarily in plants. Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG is a necessary compound that gives green tea so many of its properties. In the plant, the compound is essential as it provides resistance to the presence of free radicals that may damage the cell. This availability is equally important in human cells and bodies.

EGCG is also available in the form of energy supplements, but it is not recommended that one should consume the supplements. It is not recommended as:

  • Green tea contains collectively more healthy compounds
  • The supplements are usually synthetic and not natural
  • The supplements are not as effective as green tea as only 2% is absorbed
  • They are highly expensive

Since there are so many reasons for one to not have EGCG supplements and consume green tea, let us take a look at some of the benefits associated with drinking green tea.

Weight Loss:

This is probably the most famous property of green tea and because of which it is so popular amongst the masses. The property is not 100% effective as there are chances that the person might still gain weight. Green tea is however extremely effective in controlling the hunger and that might be one of the reasons why weight loss is deemed possible.

Cancer:

Probably the biggest use of EGCG or green tea is the treatment of cancer. Cancer cells require blood circulation for its growth, and that is stopped with the help of EGCG nutrient. In addition, it doesn’t harm the natural growth of the cells and only targets the tumor cells which are a huge advantage in cancer treatment. It is currently under research as more and more combinations of nutrients are being used to treat cancer.

Brain Functioning:

We already know that the polyphenol EGCG attacks and negates the free radicals present. This thereby reduces chances of inflammations and brain damage. Depression and mood are controlled because of the continuous production of various happy neurotransmitters like Serotonin and melatonin.

Brain capacity and memory are also slightly improved because of EGCG as it increases the brain cell growth and produces new brain cells in the cerebral cortex. It causes the production of a neurotransmitter called as GABA which is a natural relaxant of the brain.

Should Green Tea be compulsorily used?

The answer is no. Even though it has so many benefits, the person should not grow to rely on green tea’s capabilities. Green tea also contains its own caffeine which is in large amounts really harmful to the body.
