Essentially, intelligence is the capability to think, understand and act. But what intelligence really is, is a measure of your ability to change.

One question arises in this regard: can intelligence really be measured? Well, there is no definite answer to this. However, it can be said that there is more than one type of intelligence, much of which depends on genes.

Attempts Made

How to measure intelligence is perhaps the most researched topic around the world. Studies have come up with a number of different types of tests of intelligence. The following are the most sought after:

  • Aptitude tests
  • Achievement tests
  • Abstract tests

Aptitude tests are based on testing the potential development of the person taking the test. It is basically an instrument used for predicting future performance.

Achievement tests evaluate the testee on his expertise in a particular domain, thereby examining current performance.

Abstract tests are mostly aptitude in nature. School examinations are mostly achievement in nature.

Tests Are Far From Conclusive

IQ tests rarely ever successfully test your intelligence. Your actual ability to tackle situations and problems in real life mostly cannot be measured by IQ tests.

Discrimination in terms of intelligence is often made on the grounds of racism, sexism, classism and whatnot. Honestly, if you ask me, that is ironically rather unintelligent. Such silly controversies lead to an inefficient measure of IQ through tests.

You know why this problem cropped up in the first place? This is primarily because these tests were invented even before people understood what they actually want to measure. Of course, it is hard to find an answer to a question which you do not fully understand.

Taking Advantage of Intelligence

In order to fully realise the advantage that comes hand in hand with inherent intelligence or brainpower, one needs to combine it with a few other factors. These factors are good health, motivation, zeal and most importantly hard work.

One more thing to take into consideration is that intelligence comes in multiple forms.

One is fluid intelligence – capability to rationalise and handle difficult situations. This form of intelligence is highly genetic. This inference was based on a study showing identical twins to be more similar in terms of fluid intelligence rather than fraternal twins.

The other form of intelligence is crystallised intelligence – it is the measure of the knowledge acquired by an individual that relates to the level of education received by the individual.  Dose Alpha Levo IQ to increase intelligence.

Do School Grades Measure Intelligence?

Just like age does not define maturity, grades too do not measure intelligence. Even though grades at school are the most common way to decide whether you are smart or stupid, they are mostly rather unreliable.

Studies show that highly intelligent children find classroom work boring and dull. Getting good grades in school is primarily dependent on a child’s ability to work tediously and mug up redundant terminology that will probably never be required in real life.

Various children learn in various patterns. But school work usually follows a single pattern. Children who can adapt to this particular pattern fare well in school while others cannot.

This can definitely not be the only criterion for being qualified as an intelligent child. Moreover, a child brilliant in Art might be dull in Math but does that mean he is not intelligent?

The stereotype of intelligent children, getting good grades needs to be changed. The world needs to get out of its cocoon and perceive intelligence from a different viewpoint. After all, perception is an integral part of intelligence.

Gender Stereotype

Now let us address another common stereotypes related to intelligence: Men are smarter than women. The truth however is that men and women are both equally smart, just not identically smart. Both flaunt their expertise in different areas. Let’s see how different they really are.

  1. Men are proven to be more spatially aware. This implies that they are better at navigation, judging three – dimensional objects, etc. Women, on the other hand, are more superior to men at locating and remembering – their ability to navigate using landmarks and remembering things is greater.
  1. Women worry more than men because they produce less serotonin and possess fewer transporters needed to recycle it as compared to men. Therefore, they worry more than men, thereby possessing a better ability to anticipate impending danger or trouble. This also allows them to tackle problems with a better plan.
  1. Women have a better sense of detecting and identifying colours than men. All men, to a certain extent, are colour – blind, as is suggested by studies. But women have a sharp sense of colour and this is perhaps linked to their sex hormones that bring about alterations in their visual cortex.

Despite the various differences between men and women in terms of intelligence, one thing is common between the two. This is their ability to multitask. Men and women have evenly matched multitasking skills.

To Sum It Up

The popularity of the various types of IQ tests is basically a farce. The truth is that there is no truly conclusive and definite measure of intelligence.

Is there a limit to human intelligence? No. Then how can we measure something that is limitless?

Can you measure the expanse of the sky or the endlessness of the ocean? Then how can we measure intelligence?

Intelligence lies in action; it lies in creativity; it lies in imagination.
